ATLANTIC TERMINAL, BROOKLYN CRASH: January 4, 2017 – A Brooklyn-bound arriving LIRR train failed to stop upon entering Atlantic Terminal on this Wednesday morning. The train collided with the steel box that blocks the end of the track. The collision caused the first two cars of the train to derail. More than 100 of the approximately 650 passengers aboard the train were injured. The Federal Railroad Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
The MTA operates the Long Island Rail Road and its 125 stations throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Nassau County and Suffolk County, NY.
The Long Island Rail Road services over 300,000 New Yorkers per day, or 85,000,000 rides per year.
Most of these rides are uneventful. However when injuries occur on the train, they can result from a wide variety of factual scenarios.
NEW HYDE PARK – MERILLON AVENUE CRASH: October 8, 2016 – An east bound LIRR train collided with a maintenance train on a parallel track on this Saturday evening. The crash occurred between the New Hyde Park and Merillon Avenue stations in Nassau County. Authorities estimated 100 people were injured, with several dozen hospitalized. Injuries include broken bones and concussions.
