The ambulance involved was an FDNY emergency vehicle. It was occupied by a driver and 3 Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).
The ambulance was not responding to an emergency call at the time it struck the pedestrian. In fact, the FDNY ambulance was off duty at the time.
However, the published speed limit along the Cross Island Parkway in Queens is 50 mph. Authorities have not released the speed at which the FDNY ambulance was travelling. Because of traffic, vehicle speeds may have been slowed.

Man Hit by Ambulance on Highway
The pedestrian struck by the ambulance was an 89 year old man. The victim was trying to cross the busy highway on foot when he was mowed down.
The shocked paramedics loaded the victim into the back of the ambulance and administered first aid. They raced the elderly man to North Shore University Hospital where he was admitted to the emergency room. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his wounds and died at the hospital.
The victim’s family has not taken legal action against the FDNY for the accident. It appears the victim was legally at fault for crossing the highway without a crosswalk.
Accordingly, the FDNY may not face legal liability for the accident. The New York Police Department commended the paramedics strong efforts to save the battered man.
