Tragedy struck when a Long Island driver did not realize her car gear was shifted into the Reverse position. As she pressed the gas, the vehicle accelerated in reverse, barreling down on a local 16 year old girl.
The child’s heroic mother dove to push her daughter out of the way. In doing so, the woman herself was struck and killed by the approaching rear-end of the 4-door sedan automobile. The 55 year old victim was an employee of the Babylon county clerk’s office.
The 80 year old driver of the reversing vehicle committed the negligent act while attempting to exit a parking lot on Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst.
